The recovery window: what to do in the hour after a hard effort
Cooling down, refueling, and settling your nervous system after a demanding workout — the small habits that add up.

What you do right after a hard effort has an outsized effect on how you feel the next day. The first priority is bringing your heart rate down gradually rather than stopping abruptly — a slow walk or light movement for five to ten minutes helps your circulatory system transition out of exertion mode.
Next comes rehydration and a balanced snack with both protein and carbohydrates within the following hour. This is also a good window for light stretching, since your muscles are warm and more receptive to lengthening safely.
Cold exposure — whether that's a cool shower or a brief plunge — can help some people feel less inflamed the next day, though the research is mixed and comfort matters more than chasing an ideal protocol. Sleep that night is ultimately doing most of the heavy lifting, so treat the hour after activity as a bridge toward a good night's rest rather than the whole solution.
